The Job
After undergoing a change in ownership, the pristine Mohican Hills Golf Club wanted a fresh new look. The course was considered a hidden gem by golfers close to its Jeromesville location and tourists, alike, who visited the course while traveling through Amish country. A new addition to the club was Bogey’s Bar and Grille, which would need a new look that fit MHGC’s refreshed aesthetic.
The Solution
This project started as a dive into the history of the Jeromesville and nearby Mohican River, which was named after Mohican John, a mid-18th century Mohican chief who had led a small group of his tribe from Connecticut. Mohican John would go on to inspire John Mohegan—or Chingachgook, the last of the Mohicans—in James Fenimore Cooper’s legendary Leatherstocking Tales. Given the weight of the Mohican name in the area, I wanted to respectfully call attention to the tribe’s historical significance in my design. To accomplish this, I set a rough, hill-like M inside an arrowhead for an iconic, standalone logo paired with the sporty-yet-rugged Franchise and country wide Hellenic typefaces. Next, for Bogey’s, I got the ball rolling with a simple circle holding shape and “Bogey’s” set in Selfie to bring a classic caddy shack feel. The finishing touch: replacing the apostrophe with a miniature tee.
